When you think Kentucky, you may think rolling green hills, thoroughbred horses, and, of course, bourbon. But did you know you can experience the best of all three on a unique adventure aboard the Bluegrass Rail Explorers in Versailles? Buckle up, because I’m taking you on something new to do near Lexington, on a scenic railway journey through the heart of Bluegrass Country!

Look’s pretty cool right? Well let’s get into the details.

What is Rail Explorers?

Experience Kentucky in a way like no other. The Bluegrass Rail Explorers, located in Versailles Kentucky, offer a rail-bike adventure along a historic 10-mile stretch of the old Louisville Southern Railroad. Choose between comfortable two-seater or four-seater bikes, perfect for couples, families, or groups of friends. The easy-to-operate pedal bikes, powered by electric motors, ensures everyone can enjoy the ride, regardless of fitness level. You can choose to pedal or just glide with ease!

There is a “master” seat that one person of the groups choosing will sit in. This person does have to pedal lightly at times and is in charge of the brake. Everyone else on the bike can choose to also pedal or just sit back and relax, or do a mix of both!

The rail bike is not actually fully powered by the pedaling which makes it great for any fitness level!

What will you See?

The journey unfolds like a postcard painting. You’ll start at the Bluegrass Scenic Railroad and Museum where you will be told the safety directions and board the rail bikes. It’s here you are surrounded by old trains and start your adventure. There will be a group of people going on the excursion at the same time, so they release each bike one-by-one with plenty of space between them. The bikes go fast, so you can gauge how close or how far away you’d like to get to the person in front of you but ultimately you’ll likely keep a pretty good distance between them. You will be able to see them, but you wont be able to hear them or really notice because they will be so far ahead. You’ll pass pastures dotted with magnificent thoroughbred horses. Deep limestone cuts reveal towering rock formations. You’ll pass a number of other items on the train tracks like old train cars.

During the break, the rail explorer workers will turn all the rail bikes around. This is about a 20 minutes stop, so bring your snacks and drinks, soak in the panoramic views, and take a moment to appreciate the simple joys of nature. Bourbon, Bikes, and Bluegrass Bliss.
